Chapter 4

Devon

My phone screen shows three beautiful bouquets. With one click of a button, all of them will be delivered to Scarlett. I don’t want her to think I’ve gone overboard, but the fact remains that it’s been three days and I still can’t stop thinking about her. I smile and take the plunge.

I look up and stare out the front of my car. I’m supposed to focus on the job at hand and not think about her, but I fail every time. Scarlett Dickson is a distraction, albeit a welcome one.

My thoughts deviate to our kisses that night and I’m thinking about how soon I can do it again. That’s when I spot him—Marceil Jones.

When he’s stopped by the bar the other day, I can hardly believe it. I haven’t seen him in over twelve years. For him to suddenly show up unannounced makes no sense. He is the only reason I’ve spent ten years of my life behind bars. He shot the gas station attendant and told police that I’m the mastermind behind it. It’s a relief that the guy hasn’t died as that would’ve probably gotten me life in prison. Marceil has done me no favors. He is only given one to two years but, with parole and credit for time served, he is out in six months.

When he’s shown up, I’ve wanted to hit him. How can he let me rot in jail for something he’s done?

I need a favor.

At first, those words have me laughing. Why will I do anything for him when he is the one reason I’ve experienced the hard life of prison time?

I got into some gambling debt and now they’re coming after me, my wife, and my children.

Dammit. The bastard is using his family’s safety to manipulate me. And it’s working.

The passenger door opens and Marceil slides in.

“Did anyone see you?” I ask. “I told you to meet me in the alleyway. This is way too dangerous. For you and me.”

“Relax man,” he says. “I was careful. No one saw me.”

I heave a sigh and look back to the bar. We’re here to pay off Marceil’s debt. A couple of the men he’s dealing with regularly hang out here.

The mobsters can go ahead and break Marceil’s legs and I’ll not even bat an eye for what he’s done to me, but his family may get hurt and I can’t just walk away in good conscience.

“Are they here?” I ask.

“That’s Barker’s car over there.” He points to a spot beside the building. “Behind you is Selway’s car.”

I look at him. “If I somehow magically get you out of this fucked up situation you’re in, are you going to quit gambling?”

His eyebrows furrow. “Yeah, man. Of course.”

I roll my eyes. I know he’s lying. “You have a family and life to hold onto. If I have half of the things you have, I’ll cling to them with everything I have.”

“I know, but it’s an addiction,” he says. “It’s a disease.”

“Then get help!” I argue.
